While writing for Street Songs, Rick would disguise himself and visit the ghetto in Buffalo where he grew up. The pimps, the hoes, the degradation, and the police corruption put the taste of the ghetto in his mouth, giving the lyrics he voiced an edginess that could only be captured from the streets.

Rick came up with "Super Freak" after Street Songs had already been recorded. He started playing the bass line and singing the lyrics as a joke. The band decided that they should record it and add it to the album, making it one of the greatest last minute additions of all time.  MORE

Rick James considered Stevie Wonder's "Songs in the Key of Life" to be one of the best albums ever made. Street Songs sat at #1 for 22 weeks, breaking Stevie's record of 21 weeks. A little funk and determination can go a long way.
